Barragem: Mandada construir pelo Estado Novo, a albufeira cobre uma área de 1986 hectares, sendo considerada uma das maiores da Europa. Contrariamente ao habitual, o material aqui utilizado foi a terra e não o betão. Tratou-se, na época, de um trabalho pioneiro, levado a cabo pelo Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil. Foi construída com o objectivo de regadio para todo o concelho. Alimentada pelo Rio Mira, a partir de Santa Clara a água percorre: 84,9 Km de canais, 50,4 Km de distribuidores e 309,6 Km de regadeiras. A Barragem de Santa Clara fica situada no rio Mira, concelho de Odemira no Alentejo litoral, perto da fronteira algarvia. Parte da barragem encontra-se na freguesia de Santa Clara-a-Velha. Situada a 4 km da sede de freguesia, é um dos pontos mais fortes de interesse turístico do interior do concelho de Odemira. Um passeio por este lago gigante permite observar os seus inúmeros recantos e ilhéus, assim como a vasta diversidade de flora e fauna. Nas suas águas pode-se praticar canoagem, remo ou pesca desportiva, sendo que ali abundam o achigã, o pimpão e o lagostim.

The Dam:
Built by the “Estado Novo”, the reservoir covers an area of 1986 hectares, and is considered one of the largest in Europe. Contrary to the usual material used in these constructions, here was used the land, not the concrete. This was, then, a pioneering study, conducted by the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering.
It was built for the purpose of irrigation for the entire county. Powered by the Mira River, from Santa Clara water travels: 84.9 km of channels, 50.4 Km distributors and 309.6 Km irrigation channels.
Santa Clara’s dam is located in the Mira river, coastal municipality of Beja Alentejo, near the Algarve border. Part of the dam is in the parish of Santa Clara - a-Velha.
Situated 4 km from the parish council, is one of the strongest points of tourist interest of the interior of Odemira. A walk through this giant lake allows us to observe its many islets, as well as the wide diversity of flora and fauna.
In its waters you can practice canoeing, rowing or fishing, and there abound the bass, the crucian carp and crayfish.
