Geocache Description:

An easy off-set multi, taking finders from Churchyard to another interesting spot.

A micro container continuing the Church Micro series.

A beautiful church in a village setting.

ST. NICHOLAS, BARKSTON

This parish church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas.

The Ecclesiastical parish of Barkston is part of the Barkston and Hough Group of the Deanery of Loveden, Diocese of Lincoln.

The Church includes a Norman window, a 14th-century spire and 15th-century porch. There has been a church on this site from the 12th Century, you can still find C12 details within the structure, although there has been restoration work and a degree of re-building over the years. Major restoration was carried out between 1865 and 1887.

The village is sometimes referred to as Barkston le Willows, it is mentioned in the Domesday book as ‘Barchestune’ the origins of the name being a mixture of Old English and Scandinavian ; Barkr + tun.

If you read the church noticeboard you may see that there is an advert offering properties for rent. This refers to the Almshouses in the village, originally built in 1640 and then re-built in 1839.

Arthur Jefferson, the father of Stan Laurel is buried in the village cemetery.

The River Witham is close by, and there is a record of the lost village of ‘Ringsthorpe’ being sited to the West of Barkston across the river, (I intend to explore this area in closer detail over the next few months). I hope that you find the church and the surrounding area interesting.
