This cache has been archived.

fishingmad: Well it has been over a month since this event so it must be time to archive it. I know there is still one more attendance log still to come but he will have to search for it in the archive lists.

Geocache Description:

Ever wanted to say you have been right in the middle of the Spencer Gulf?

Well here is your chance!

It's up to you how you get yourself to the island BUT!!!!

On Sunday the 16th of Feruary I will be kayaking from the Port Augusta Yacht Club Beach to Yorkey's Crossing and back. So I will be passing this ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GULF twice on the trip. It is hard to set a firm time that I will be at the island so the event times are between 10am and 1pm, as this is the window that I hope to be passing by there.

Of course you could just wait there with anybody else for a bit of a chat until I get there (depending on the tide GZ may be under water so keep that in mind).

Now given that this is a big window and I will be passing through the area on a kayak and could miss you, I have devised a system to let me know you have attended. Please attach a waterproof ribbon or tape with your caching name on it to any clearly visible mangrove at the Southern most tip of the island (the given coordinates are just in a bit from here, but any mangrove out in the open would be great). I will be placing one there myself on my journey up the gulf and will collect all the ribbons on my journey back down.

Now I know this doesn't sound like much of an event, but the event is as much about the adventure of getting there as it is about the time spent at/on the island.

There is a kayaking activity associated with this event so please feel free to join me on the kayaking challenge and make a big day of it.

I have done this trip 3 times before and will follow a similar agenda to the previous times.

SO, here are the details of the associated activity.

Just remember this is not the event, it is just how I will be getting there and I am inviting you to join me.

Meet at the Port August Yacht Club (the waypoint marked as the Parking Area) at 8am for an 8:30am departure. Look out for me as there will be a few people around, I will be in a silver Ford Maverick with roof racks, a TB on the back and towing a trailer.

From there it takes about 1.5 hours to reach "THE ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GULF" where we will hopefully meet up with anybody who has made their own way there for the event.

From there we can go on to Yorkey's Crossing (waypoint marked as Yorkey's). We then can have a bit of a break and play in the area before heading back towards Port Augusta.

We then will be passing the ISLAND again somewhere around 12:30pm to 1pm, where we can meet up with any late comers to the event and collect any ribbons left behind by those who have left.

Then it is on a bit further to a spot where we can stop for lunch on the way back usually at the old Salt Works (also a marked waypoint). From there it can be a paddle straight back to Port Augusta or maybe some exploring of the creek systems nearby. The plan is to be back any time after 3pm (we usually have got back by 4pm). It has been worked out that we will be travelling with the tide in both directions. The total distance is about 24km, but it is not a race so don't be scared off by this.

I will be doing this trip with a large group of friends, mainly for safety, so feel free to invite anyone you like. We will also be doing this trip as an UNSUPPORTED trip so there is no planned rescue vessel (so maybe someone may wish to make their way to the event on a motor boat and become a resue vessel for us, but you won't be able to go past the top train bridge to get to Yorkey's Crossing). So with this in mind you will need to carry everything you need with you.

Here is a list of suggested items:

  • A kayak or canoe with a life jacket for every person on board (it is a legal requirement).
  • Food and plenty of water for the day.
  • Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and suitable clothing.
  • suitable footware as you may need to walk over some rough terrain.
  • Geocaching kit (in a waterproof container).
  • 1st aid kit (let's hope we don't need it).
  • water gun or water cannon
  • A sense of adventure and willingness for good fun

If you do come along for the paddle and decide for any reason that you won't be able to make it the whole way please feel free to turn around at any time, just let somebody know so we don't send out a search party. Plus all times listed above for the agenda of my travels are very much dependant on the people who come with me ( I will be bringing at least 2 of my kids with me) and the weather.

I hope to see plenty of ribbons on the mangroves but better yet I would love to see plenty of people join me on the paddle. Please let me know via your attendance log how you intend to get to the island so that we don't wait for you at Port Augusta as we will be leaving as close as possible to 8:30am.

******There will also be a bad weather contingency plan where we may just have to meet at one of the local pubs for drink and chat about what could have been. I will post this via a log on the cache page should it be necessary.******
