O Tunel da Ribeira Brava faz parte de VR1, a única via rápida da ilha da Madeira. A construção desta via teve início em 1989 e os últimos sublanços entraram em operação em 2005.
No total tem 44,198 quilómetros de extensão e vai desde a Ribeira Brava até ao Porto do Caniçal, providenciando também uma ligação rápida entre a cidade do Funchal e o aeroporto. Dentro da cidade do Funchal, esta via também é designada por Cota 200. A VR1 possui um perfil transversal tipo de duas vias por sentido.
A concessão encontra-se atualmente atribuída à empresa VIALITORAL – Concessões Rodoviárias da Madeira, S.A.
Este túnel encontra-se no top 20 dos maiores túneis rodoviários de Portugal, contando com uma extenção de cerca de 1800m, em cada um dos sentidos (existe um túnel para cada sentido).
A partir do GZ é possivel observar toda a extenção do túnel com sentido Campanário-Ribeira Brava. Para evitar perigo na circulação junto à estrada, uma vez que esta não possui um passeio para peões, é possível ir junto à levada no lado de fora da estrada.

The Tunnel of Ribeira Brava is part of VR1, the only highway on the island of Madeira. The construction of this road began in 1989 and the last subsections went into operation in 2005.
Altogether is 44.198 kilometers long and runs from Ribeira Brava to Porto do Caniçal also providing a fast link between the city of Funchal and the airport. Within the city of Funchal, this route is also called Cota 200. The VR1 has a type of two-way per direction transverse profile.
