Geocache Description:

All Saints - Thrumpton

Situated just off the A453, the church of All Saints, Thrumpton is a small worshipping community with ancient roots. It is one of five churches that make up the 453 group of churches, the others being St George at Barton-in-Fabis, St Lawrence at Gotham, St Winifred at Kingston-on-Soar, and Holy Trinity at Ratcliffe-on-Soar.

The first mention of the church is in 1210 when “Reginald Basset and Richard Putrell (Powdrell) released all their right and claim to the advowson of the church of Thurmodeston (Thrumpton) by Fine Rolls 12 John I to Ranulph, Prior of Norton (Cheshire) and his successors”. Thrumpton (and Kingston-on-Soar) were acquired by the priory of Norton who had also acquired Ratcliffe on Soar church in 1135 and was seeking expansion.

Ratcliffe became the mother church and Thrumpton and Kingston were considered chapelries. Norton built in stone and the western part of the nave dates from this period with the tower probably being built later.

The current Church is a Grade II* listed building in the Thrumpton Conservation Area. The remnant of the original church is built of ashlar and random rubble obtained from more than one quarry and is of 13th or 14th century construction. There have been alterations through the ages with the addition of the nave and then the tower which also had a spire at some time.

In 1870 restoration work to the church was carried out for Lucy, Lady Byron by the well known Victorian architect G E Street. The chancel was rebuilt and the nave restored but the tower remained unaltered. In 2004 the tower was subject to significant repair and restoration work.

There are many interesting architectural points at All Saints and you can read more about them here -
