La particularité de cet amphithéâtre réside dans le fait qu'il n'a pas été érigé sur le sol, mais au contraire creusé dans le banc coquiller sur lequel la ville de Doué-la-Fontaine repose.
La date de construction des Arènes a donné lieu à de nombreuses controverses entre historiens et archéologues car aucun texte ne fait mention de leur existence avant le 16ème siècle.
C'est ce site exceptionnel et ses caves troglodytes qui accueillent chaque année les Journées de la Rose, en juillet et le marché de noël, en décembre.
Note : en dehors d'évènements particuliers comme ceux cités précédemment, les arènes ne sont pas ouvertes au public. On peut les apercevoir à partir du waypoint associé. La cache se situe à l'extérieur avec une vue donnant sur la cour derrière.
The particularity of this amphitheater is that it has not been built on the ground, but instead dug in shelly sand on which the town of Doue-la-Fontaine rests.
The construction date of the arena gave rise to much controversy among historians and archaeologists because no text mentions their existence until the 16th century.
It is this exceptional site and its troglodyte caves which are hosting each year the "Journées de la Rose" (days of the rose), in July, and Christmas market, in December.
Note: apart from special events such as those mentioned above, the arenas are not open to the public. They can be seen from the associated waypoint. The cache is located outside, overlooking the courtyard behind.
