With the high rainfall and deep soils on the escarpment, this is a prime area for forestation. Many thousands of hectares of exotic trees have been planted, mainly pine and bluegum. They certainly have saved the exploitation of our indigenous hardwoods like yellowwood and stinkwood.
The downside of these vast manmade forests, is the ever decreasing area of grasslands left over. Some species that require these montane grasslands to breed and to feed, are now regarded as vulnerable. An examle is the Blue swallow of which the current population is estimated to be between 1,500 and 4,000 and decreasing. (Wikipedia)
