L’hôpital de Doué fondé en 1229 par Eustachie Gueldwin, habitante de Doué, était à l’origine une aumônerie pour les pauvres. La fondatrice a entrepris cette construction « Pour l’amour de Dieu, le salut de son âme, en l’honneur de Dieu, de la Vierge et de St Nicolas ».
Au Moyen Age, l’hôpital accueillait les pauvres et les malades curables. On y soignait les maladies contagieuses telles que la danse de Saint Gui (maladie du système nerveux), les écrouelles ou encore le mal caduc (épilepsie).
Les bâtiments de cette cour datent du 18ème S.
Au 19ème S., la médecine se développe. On créé alors un asile, un orphelinat, un bureau de bienfaisance, une maternité, une pharmacie moderne et une salle de chirurgie. Pendant les guerres de Vendée et la Première Guerre Mondiale, cet hôpital a soigné les soldats blessés.
Actuellement, il ne reste qu’une maison de retraite et une maison de convalescence.
La place Verdun accueille depuis de nombreuses années le marché aux fruits et légumes chaque lundi matin.
