Les Fontaines
La ville de Doué s’est construite autour d’un ruisseau alimenté par une source qui prenait naissance sous l’église St-Pierre actuelle.
Ce lieu prit le nom de Fontaine, nom qu’il a gardé.
Au Moyen Age, la fontaine était en forme de fer à cheval.
Le lavoir, le puits et l’abreuvoir pour animaux y étaient confondus.
Baron Foullon
Au 18ème siècle, sous l’influence du baron Foullon, on décide de créer deux bassins distincts : un lavoir et un abreuvoir.
Le lavoir se trouvait là où il est encore actuellement et l’abreuvoir (un bassin identique), de l’autre côté de la rue à la place de la halte routière. Chaque bassin mesurait 44 mètres de long et 26 mètres de large ! L’abreuvoir, comblé en 1950, était accessible aux chevaux et au bétail.
Fountains
The City of Doué is built around a spring-fed stream who took birth under the current St Peter's church.
This place took the name of Fontaine, name it kept.
In the Middle Ages, the fountain was in the shape of a horseshoe.
The washing place, the well and the drinking trough for animals were combined.
Baron Foullon
In the 18th century, under the influence of Baron Foullon, it is decided to create two separate basins: a washing place and a trough.
The washing place was where it is still currently and the trough (same area) on the other side of the street instead of the rest area. Each basin measured 44 meters long and 26 meters wide! The trough, filled in 1950, was open to horses and livestock.
