2012 marked the Centenary of the founding of St Michael and All Angels Parish in Westcliff-on-Sea; an Anglican Church in the Diocese of Chelmsford. Beginning with the first service in a tent in June, the original church building was erected in the summer of 1912 and dedicated that September. That building is now the Church Hall. The current church building was completed in the 1930s.Interestingly, the Church is in Westcliff, whereas the Hall is in Leigh.
The land between Hamlet Court Road and Leigh Broadway was being rapidly developed, as the land was sold off by farmers and landowners. St Saviours parish had been formed in 1907 from the old rural parish of St Mary Prittlewell, but those living at its western end had to tramp along unmade roads to get to church every Sunday. The dynamic Vicar of St Saviours, Hugh Morrison Rose, called two public meetings to discuss the problem, and all agreed that there should be a new church built there. Land on the south side of Leigh Road was bought, and the first service on the site was conducted on Sunday 9th June at 11 am in a tent hired from the Church Army.
As well as regular services, Homegroups and Alpha Courses, the church aims to serve the community with varied activities ranging from fellowship for the elderly and those with disabilities, to uniformed organisations, Carers and Toddlers and Messy Church for families.
