When the then new housing estate grew up around Harris Street in the 1880s, a group of people from the Queen Street Baptist Church (now underneath Queensgate shopping centre and replaced by the building in Park Road!) raised the money to buy the corner site. They didn't have enough to build a church, but saved the site from housing development until they had enough to build the Mission Hall. Several years later, the church was built.
