Porthmadog came into existence after William Maddocks built a sea wall known as the Cob in 1811. This reclaimed land for agriculture from Traeth Mawr and the diverted Afon Glaslyn scoured out a natural harbour and formed the port. The Cob was part of Madocks' plans for a road from London to a proposed port at Porthdinllaen. The port exported slate slate around the world but its commercial role was effectively ended by the First World War, when the lucrative German market for slate disappeared. Today, Porthmadog is a popular tourist destination.
Porthmadog station is the meeting point for both the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways. These are two-feet narrow gauge railways. You can also visit the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway in Porthmadog and there is a main line station.
The Ffestiniog Railway takes you on a 13½-mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog
The Welsh Highland Railway trains start a spectacular 25 mile scenic journey from beneath the castle walls at Caernarfon, run by the side of Snowdonia’s mountains and continues to Porthmadog.
