Leonardo Nunes - O Abarebebê
Leonardo Nunes nasceu em São Vicente da Beira, em Portugal, no seio de uma família de cristãos-novos, antigos judeus convertidos ao Cristianismo. Seu pai é Simão Álvares e sua mãe Isabel Fernandes. Veio ao mundo em data incerta, possivelmente, em 1518. Já era padre, quando, em 1548, entrou para a Companhia de Jesus. A partir do colégio da Companhia, em Coimbra, percorreu o Minho e a Beira, em pregação, vivendo de esmolas, o que muito chocou seus pais, quando o viram a mendigar, na sua terra natal. Veio para o Brasil trazido por Tomé de Souza em 1549. Contemporâneo do Irmão Diogo Jacome, foi enviado à São Vicente. Converteu o caçador de índios Pedro Correia, que depois de ingressar na Companhia de Jesus, morreu mais tarde, martirizado. Movendo-se rapidamente de um local para outro naquele meio inóspito do Brasil do século 16, fez com que os índios o apelidassem de Abareveve (veve no tupi original), Padre Voador, nome que chegou até nós já deformado como Abarebebê. Foi um libertador de índios na região de Itanhaém e Peruíbe e por isso talvez tenha sido o padre mais importante para a região do Litoral Sul. Ajudou na construção da ermida no Morro dos Jesuítas, hoje, as ruínas do Abarebebê. Morreu tragicamente no naufrágio de uma caravela que ia de São Vicente para a Europa em 1554, com apenas 36 anos de idade. Em Portugal recentemente publicou-se um livro do Autor Miguel José Teodoro, intitulado "Abarebebê, Tão Rápido Como Um Beija-Flor"!

Leonardo Nunes was born in São Vicente da Beira, Portugal, into a family of young Christians, former Jews converted to Christianity. His father is Simão Álvares and his mother Isabel Fernandes. He came to the world on an uncertain date, possibly in 1518. He was a priest when, in 1548, he entered the Society of Jesus. From the College of the Company, in Coimbra, he traveled the Minho and Beira in preaching, living on alms, which very shocked his parents when they saw him begging in his native land. He came to Brazil brought by Tomé de Souza in 1549. A contemporary of Brother Diogo Jacome, he was sent to São Vicente. He converted the hunter of Indians Pedro Correia, who after joining the Society of Jesus, later died, martyred. In Portugal, a book by the author Miguel José Teodoro was recently published entitled "Abarebebê, As Fast as a Hummingbird"!
