Nascentes e Aqueduto da Gargantada
No reinado de Pedro II, o Príncipe D. João (futuro D. João VI) a quem fora oferecida a Nascente da Gargantada, ordenou o início das obras deste Aqueduto, que levava a água desde Queluz até ao Terreiro do Paço para consumo das cavalariças reais, no ano de 1790. Quatro anos depois, a obra era concluída.
O Aqueduto nasce no lugar da Gargantada, em Carenque, onde existem duas nascentes: a nascente da Gargantada e a do Pocinho. Segue pela encosta esquerda do vale até à Ponte de Carenque e entra na Freguesia da Venteira onde apresenta um troço exterior, constituído por um conjunto de arcarias; continua então para o seu destino, o Palácio de Queluz, no Município de Sintra.
A partir de 1802, a água é encanada para as cocheiras reais e, anos mais tarde, em 1846, a falta de limpeza do Aqueduto provoca a sua inutilização, sendo a água desviada para a Quinta das Necessidades, na Reboleira.
O Aqueduto da Gargantada foi classificado como imóvel de interesse público, pelo Decreto-Lei n.º 95/78, publicado no Diário da República n.º 210 de 12 de setembro de 1978.
Springs and Aqueduct of Gargantada
In the reign of Pedro II, Prince d. João (future John VI) who had been offered the source of Gargantada, ordered the beginning of the works of this aqueduct, which carried the water from the Queluz Palace Square (Terreiro do Paço) for consumption of the Royal Mews, in the year 1790. Four years later, the work was completed.
The Aqueduct is born in place of Gargantada in Carenque, where there are two sources: the source of Gargantada and do Pocinho. Along the left slope of the valley until the Carenque bridge and enters the Town of Venteira where features a outdoor section, consisting of a set of arches; then continues to its destination, the Palace of Queluz, in the municipality of Sintra.
From 1802, the water is piped to the Royal Stables and, years later, in 1846, the lack of cleanliness of the aqueduct causes their destruction, the water being diverted to the Quinta das requirements, in Shelkovo.
The Aqueduct of Gargantada was classified as property in the public interest, by Decree-Law No. 95/78, published in Official Gazette No. 210 of September 12, 1978.
