Geocache Description:

This cache is located at a locked gate to once was the mill operations area of getting uranium ore from the dirt.  There is a marble information stone located here with more information.  There may be a closed gate you might have to go through to get to the cache site.  Do not attempt to enter past the locked gate.

***PLEASE READ BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO FND THIS CACHE***

The location of this cache is in rural Wyoming.  As a result, there are some cautions that you need to know about.  Some of this information may sound like a no brainer to most but I give this information to those who may be unfamiliar with Wyoming, especially rural Wyoming.

  1. YOU WILL NEED A GPS TO FIND THESE CACHES.  See below as to why this is.
  2. THERE MAY NOT BE CELL PHONE SERVICE IN THIS AREA!  Please let someone know where you are going and when you will be back home in case something happens while you are in this area geocaching.  If you get stranded out here, it may be days before someone arrives remotely close to find you.  Pack plenty of survival equipment such as water, food, and stuff for current weather conditions.
  3. CHECK THE WEATHER BEFORE TRAVELING TO THIS CACHE!  The roads leading to this cache are dirt and can become very muddy and stay that way after rainstorms and when snow melts.  During winter months, the roads can potentially be closed due to snowdrifts.  The roads are either very rarely maintained or not maintained at all.
  4. With the above said, it is STRONGLY ADVISABLE to travel to this cache using a four wheel drive pickup truck, jeep, ATV, or similar type of vehicle.  This is rural Wyoming, not downtown Los Angeles where you can take a Prius.  While some of the roads to the cache can be able to be driven on with a car, doing so is at your own risk.  While I placed this cache using my pickup truck in two-wheel drive, changing of weather or road conditions occur frequently in this area.
  5. The area of the cache and surrounding areas (including ALL roads) are located in an old mining district.  Please watch out for travel hazards such as boards with nails, pieces of metal, sharp rocks, etc. that may puncture tires.  Make sure that you vehicle is equipped with a spare tire and the stuff needed to change a tire.  Make sure your vehicle is maintained properly to travel in this remote area.

***CACHE INFORMATION***

This cache is part of a series of caches located in the Gas Hills area of Wyoming.  The area that the cache series is located in is in central Wyoming in both Fremont County and Natrona County.  The Gas Hills area is also known as the Gas Hills mining district, where uranium once was mined for several decades.  The cache’s in this series will take you to places of historical importance where there can be different monuments telling you the story of this area.  Some of the cache’s will take you to abandoned and potentially forgotten areas, such as mining camp locations.  To enjoy this series, it is my recommendation to leave early on the day you want to go geocaching and plan on staying out for the day.  There is an abundance of history, scenery, and wildlife to enjoy.

When traveling to the cache, there may be gates that you might have to open.  Please close the gates if you open them.  Please respect the lands out here for others to enjoy.  If you find the cache, unless otherwise stated, it is a log only cache so please bring a pen and sign the log.  Please place the cache back as you found it.  If the cache is missing or needs repair, please contact me to replace it.  Happy hunting, I hope you enjoy your time geocaching this series.  For general information about the Gas Hills area, please visit this PDF document at http://wyoshpo.state.wy.us/pdf/interp_plan_doc_9_7.pdf.
