Geocache Description:

Easy Drive By Cache at the Dead Sea

This cache is to help visiting geocachers on a tour at the Dead Sea to be able to sneak away from their group and grab an easy cache.

Cache is in a 35 mm plastic film canister. Bring your own pen/pencil to log the cache.

The Cache is located outside the entrance to Qumran National Park, so it can be accessed without paying the entrance fee.

Qumran is where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. The Dead Sea Scrolls are the oldest surviving manuscripts (408 BCE to 318 CE) of passages that later became part of the bible. The actual Dead Sea Scrolls can be seen in the Shrine of the Book at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, but here you can see where they were written, see from afar the caves where they were hidden and learn about the Essenes sect that lived here and wrote the scrolls.

There is a short film presentation about the Essenes, a reconstruction of life at this time and after you can can tour the archaeological site.

There is a snack bar, restaurant and (expensive!) gift shop at the site.
