Geocache Description:

In the tradition of the late, great gdhoss, after enjoying our gold ammo can for many months we decided to repurpose it back into a new cache hide. The container is not at these posted coordinates; solve the puzzle to make the find.

NOTE ON TERRAIN & LOCATION: The final is close to, but is not on, the golf course. Do not trespass on the golf course, and in season please hide from the golfers! Among the ways to reach the final are jumping the stream, crossing a large limb bridge or walking across a frozen stream. IT IS POSSIBLE to reach GZ without either crossing the creek or trespassing on the golf course, and that is how the container was placed. The terrain rating is higher than The WBs usually place, so please take the terrain rating seriously and be careful. In winter the banks are slippery, and in summer the undergrowth is brutal, so pick your poison. Thanks!

Early finder prizes: V. I. Warshawski Blu-Ray (the film’s ok but the books are better), and a brand new copy of the Warshawski book Body Work. Also there is Volume One of the "Geocaching Music" CD, and a screaming flying monkey.

Victoria Iphigenia “Vic” Warshawski took the day off to take in a Sox game on the south side. There she became acquainted with three Chicago baseball fans, Dave, William and Christopher. Based on the information she received during the game, while chatting with the three men along the third base line, see if you come to the same conclusions Vic Warshawski did.

STEP 1: Logic

  • Dave is a bigger Sox fan than the oldest of the three men.
  • William is not the youngest.
  • Christopher is younger than the man who is the least avid Sox fan.
  • Christopher is more of a Sox fan than the youngest of the three men.

Step 2: Sports Trivia and an Anagram

  • When Vic asked the oldest of the three men who his all-time favorite Chicago White Sox player was, he responded, “Da last southsider to ever wear #35, dat’s who. Da Big Hurt.”
  • When asked the same question, the youngest of the three surprisingly answered, “The one whose nickname is a synonym for ‘barefoot’.”
  • The middle-aged of the three’s favorite White Sox player? “The one whose name is an anagram of ‘Glamorized Goon’.”

AGE FAVORITE WHITE SOX PLAYER (Last Name)
(Oldest)(# of letters in first name="a") (# of letters in last name="d")
(Middle)(# of letters in first name="b") (# of letters in last name="e")
(Youngest)(# of letters in first name="c") (# of letters in last name="f")

Step 3: Analysis

This old photo of one of the aforementioned baseball legends has been modernized to represent a numeral associated with baseball. What is the magic number? Call it "x."

Step 4: Compute the Answer

You should now have 7 different integers, called a, b, c, d, e, f, and x.

Solve (in order, calculator style, not in order of mathematical operations):

NOTE: "c2x10" and "c820832" are not mathematical operations, but simply integers where you need to substitute numbers for letters.

Sources and Acknowledgments:The graphics were designed for this cache page by the cache owner, using fair use materials. The idea for using animated .gif images on puzzle pages has been under discussion for many months between The WBs and J&LA; when J&LA start using .gifs on their puzzles, you can bet they will be a lot harder than this one. Good luck!
