Back in the late 1800s, pirates were known to roam Lake Superior. One particular pirate ship, the Wet Willie, was notorious for raiding passing ships. My dad Jack (or Jackie as my Grandma called him) would tell me stories about the Wet Willie. Now my dad was well known to tell some pretty tall tales, but the tales about the Wet Willie got me to thinking that there might be some truth in it.
You see, I was actually raised on the shores of Lake Superior, where my parents owned Wonderland Resort. Our next door neighbor, Hjelmer, had his own marina. My dad claimed that years ago, this little cove was a landing place for the Wet Willie. The crew on Wet Willie used this hidden cove as it was the perfect remote spot to unload the goods. One year, the Wet Willie had sailed in from Lake Erie when the pirates on board decided to raid a passing ship transporting valuable coins to Duluth. The pirates knew that others would be after their booty and so decided it would be best to bring their new treasure several miles inland. After hiding the treasure, the pirates returned to their homes out east, but leading the life of pirates, they soon met their demise and were unable to return to claim their treasure. It remains where they hid it to this day.
The reason that I thought that this particular story had some truth to it, is that my dad had the actual treasure map to where it was hidden. He had found it buried beneath an old storage shed that we had torn down at the resort years ago. The map had names of the pirates, Captain Death Danny and Matey Bill Bones, written on the back to prove it's ownership. Cleaning out my parents house recently, I ran across this map and decided to seek the treasure for myself. After driving up into the country and following an old railroad grade, lo and behold, there it was. And yes, it was filled with many coins! Some of the coins came from other states and some were so rare that no record of them exists, but there they were.
I had taken the coins home, and was haunted by Danny and Bill that very night! It was horrible and terrifying. I quickly returned the treasure chest the next day. They made it very clear to me that if I was to take a coin, I had to leave a coin. Of course, being pirates, they said it was very much ok with them if I was to add to their booty without taking anything.
Even though I couldn't keep the treasure, I decided to share the secret of the location with others. But, I also don't want some modern day pirates to clean it out and suffer like I did. So, you have to solve the puzzle to find the treasure. As this treasure is filled with coins, please feel free to discover the active ones and leave them...only take one if you replace it with another. Or, just add to their booty like I did. Maybe by doing so, you will increase your luck at finding other treasures.
I left a special coin for the FTF. This one is removable without experiencing the wrath of the ghosts!!
