Welcome to the area of headquarters of the National Park Service, National Trails Intermountain Region, 1100 Old Santa Fe Trail, Santa Fe, NM.  The staff at this NPS office collaborate with partners to provide leadership and coordination in the planning, protection, development, and interpretation of  the Santa Fe National Historic Trail.   The Santa Fe Trail Association is one of those partners.

The National Historic Trails System, established by the National Trails System Act of 1968, commemorates historic routes and promotes their preservation and development for public use. National Historic Trails recognize diverse facets of history such as prominent past routes of exploration, migration, trade, communication, and military action. The historic trails generally consist of remnant sites and trail segments, and thus are not necessarily contiguous.

The Santa Fe National Historic Trail was established in 1987 and the NPS and the SFTA work together to administer this 1,203 mile long National Historic Trail.

The building that houses the Intermountain Support Office of the National Park Service was designated a National Landmark in 1987.  It is a masterpiece of Pueblo Revival architecture and is one of the largest adobe office buildings in the US.  This building was designed by NPS architect Cecil J. Doty, taking counsel from John Gaw Meem.    The design is a magnificent Southwestern Spanish-Pueblo Revival-style masterpiece, and they also designed furniture that was made in the building, for the building, and envisioned paintings and other works of art specifically for the building.  The building is а traditional adobe building, one-story except fоr а double-height entrance area and contains exposed timber vigas аnd adobe bricks.  It was constructed оn site by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937-39 with furnishings, artwork and engineering features provided by the men and women of the Work Projects Administration. Numerous works of art were acquired under the WPA Arts Program specifically to go in the building.
