Der Währingerpark ist auf Gründen eines ehemaligen Friedhofes entstanden. Zwischen 1783 und 1923 befand sich hier ein "Nobelfriedhof", der "Währinger Allgemeine Ortsfriedhof". Auf ihm waren Prominente wie Johann Nestroy oder Franz Grillparzer begraben. Es war die erste Parkanlage der Ersten Republik (1918 bis 1938), die von einem Friedhof zu einem Park umgewandelt wurde.
