Begin at the trailhead reference point given. This trail goes to geocache GC4RYHB, The Bulls. After this, you can continue up to the Hacienda. First, climb uphill a few meters to get on the trail at S 11 43.054 W 075 32.482. Continue walking for a few minutes to S11 42.906 W 075 32.424. Here the trail splits--you can get to the Hacienda via the trail on the hillside, or by walking along the canyon bottom. For variety, you might use one route up and the other back. (In January, February and March, the canyon bottom may be too muddy to be passable.) If you take the route on the hillside, you will be walking along a Xauxa (pre-Incan) road that cuts through a band of stone. These stones were once an ancient sea bed during the Triassic era, which was lifted up when the Andes formed. Some of the rocks have fossils of shells.
The hacienda is about one hundred years old. It is abandoned now, and you are free to explore the buildings. It was prosperous from the 1930's to the 1970's, but during the terrorism era, it was too isolated and vulnerable and the owners shut it down. Today it is peaceful and several families have grazing rights in this little valley. You may see them tending their sheep. There are terraces built into the hillsides here, possibly by the Xauxa, whose road passed through this valley on its way to a ceremonial site, Yanapuma, on the top of the mountain to the northeast.
