Geocache Description:

This cache is beside the oldest church in the valley

During the Colonial era, the Spanish settlers built this chapel in the 17th century. Before that time, it was a sacred site of the Xauxa civilization. There are a few remants of a ceremonial center on the hill above the chapel, and a sacred spring nearby that is still used for Andean rituals today. The chapel is now in the town of Yanamarca. The Yanamarca river flows near the church also. It’s not clear whether the Valley of Yanamarca was named for the river or the town, or vice-versa.

**
