The town of Shutuy Marca was a part of the Xauxa culture that thrived in the 10th through 14th centuries. When the Inca Empire came to conquer the Xauxa, they took little notice of the small town of Shutuy Marca. This may be why there are several very well preserved structures.
You can get to this site by car, but it should be a 4-wheel drive vehicle, and the dirt road can be dangerous when wet. If you don’t have your own vehicle, you can hire a taxi at the terminal in Jauja, or possibly in the plaza of Sacas. The parking spot for the ruin is in the waypoint list. We recommend entering the site through the ancient gate (waypoint in the list).
If you are a strong hiker, we recommend that you hike to this archeological site from Sacas. It is a lovely hike, one of our favorite hikes in this region. There are two trails to Shutuy Marca. One (see GC4R9DX) is the low road, which goes through a ravine, then ends with a challenging climb up to the ruins. The other is the high road (see GC4R9EN), which follows a ridge to the ruins. The beginning (near the Sacas plaza) is probably the hardest part of the high route. There is a geocache hidden along each trail, making this a circle route with 3 caches. You can do it in either direction. You should plan on 3 to 4 hours to do the circle route.
The cache is a plastic container hidden near a two-level chullpa. The difficulty rating given is for hiking here from Sacas. If you walk from the dirt road, the difficulty is 2.5.
