Geocache Description:

An introduction to Natural Bridge State Park sponsered by the WGA, placed and maintained by Hotdogs_Off_Trail.

Natural Bridge State Park is noted for its weathered sandstone bridge, with an opening 25' high by 35' wide, that was missed by the last glacial period. In the natural rock shelter under the sandstone arch is oone of the oldest known sites for human habitation in the Midwest. This site has been a spot to visit from the earliest days of Sauk county, written reference to the bridge in the Old Settler's Association Reports of 1874.

Nestled in the Baraboo Hills between the small communities of Leland and Denzer, the Park, established in 1973, has a self guiding nature trail on the uses of plants by Native Americans which winds through the 60-acre scientific area. A Whitetail hiking trail, two miles long, is located in the woods on the south side of the highway.

Although no gate attendant is available, State Park entrance stickers are required, and available for self-purchase. No admittance is necessary to retrieve this cache.

SS

Southern Savannah Biome

This region, the bottom middle of the state, is characterized by remnants of the once predominant oak savanna biome.  A savannah will have a low plant density, allowing for grassland development under the open canopy of forest dominated by oak.  These landscapes are often described as “park like” due to their open appearance and with development, are disappearing from their original boundaries.  Red-Headed Woodpeckers and Wild Turkey are birds that depend on this kind of biome, and of course Whitetail Deer are seen throughout the area, as are raccoons, squirrels and small rodents.
