Geocache Description:

ARDMORE VILLAGE BURN CROSSING
Ardmore village ruins

At the northern edge of Mull, Ardmore is the setting for a fine woodland and coastal path, and also a cycle track. The location offers fine views north to Ardnamurchan and west to the islands of Coll (nearest), Tiree, Rhum, and, if you're lucky with the weather, Skye too.

Over the years, as parts of the area have been felled, the physical history of Ardmore has been revealed, such as the ruined villages of Penalbanach and Ardmore itself.

At the cache location you will find a number of ruins, which were the crofts that formed the village, and a tiny schoolroom. From this location, the path continues into the forest to Ardmore Bay, passing more ruins en route.

The wild and unspoilt coastline offers the walker fine views of seals, a variety of sea birds, eagles and otters, too. But the great pleasure here is in quiet contemplation of times and lives past, of the hardships those who lived here must have endured, and of the bountiful wildlife that awaits the quiet and the patient visitor.

The cache is placed close to the burn crossing, which is achieved on stepping stones - so take care with your footing.

While the opportunity should be taken to view the village ruins, please do not damage, leave no litter, and take only memories of this lovely place.

Getting there: Although the cache can be visited in isolation, it lies along an established Forest Walk that leads down to Ardmore Bay, and back past a viewing hide on the shoreline, to another abandoned village (Penalbanach). More caches lie along this walk, as well as a solitary cache out at Ardmore Point.
