Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden outside the fortress walls.

The fortress is open for public from 07:00 untill 20:00 during summertime (18.May - 1.Sept)

This is the official opening period from Bergen kommune, but it seems like the Fortress is open in other periods also (or even closed then suppposed to be open...) - so please check at the entrance!

Fredriksberg Fortress

Fredriksberg Fortress is located on the highest point on Nordnes. The fortress is named after King Fredrik III, king of Denmark and Norway from 1648 to 1670.
The fortress was originally planned around 1640, but it was not realized. After the battle of “Vågen” in Bergen in 1665 between an English flotilla of warships and a Dutch merchant and treasure fleet, the building of the fortress started.

The building of the fortress stalled, and during the 1690s the building of the fortress was restarted. The construction of the fortress was completed by 1706. The fortress has never been used in battle, and it was closed as fortress in 1872. The military organization moved from the area in 1919.

The fortress has also been part of the fire brigade in the City from 1700. Most important was this function in the period from 1905 to 1926. The white tower is from this period and was used as watch tower for fires.

Information in Norwegian can be found at Bergen kommune
