The Xauxa town of Tunanmarca was divided into two neighborhoods. This geocache is set in what was once the lower neighborhood or barrio abajo. This area is where we have found native potatoes growing wild. Potatoes are native to Peru and were brought to the rest of the world by the Spanish conquistadores. During the height of the Xauxa period, potatoes were grown on the valley floors and on terraces or andenes on the slopes. The potato plants that grow here may be the descendants of plants left here 500 years ago. You’re most likely to see the potatoes growing among the ruined buildings in the later part of the rainy season. Even if you don’t see the potatoes themselves, you can use your imagination to picture the amount of potatoes it took to feed this city of 13,000 people!
This is a good opportunity to train your eye to see the family compounds that make up most of the city, even in their ruined state. This cache (a plastic container) is hidden in such a compound. Look for a central patio, surrounded by round homes. The homes are connected by walls. One or two narrow streets lead into the compound. As you walk around the ruins of the city, you can see this structure repeated over and over.
A point of interest to visit as you make your way between this cache and GC4MWBA is the main plaza of ancient Tunanmarca. (The location is listed as “plaza” in the waypoint list.) The rectangular building, one of very few structures in Tunanmarca that aren’t round, was probably the town hall. Next to it is a plaza that was likely the site of markets and festivals. In the plaza, near the town hall, you can find an example of a stone on which grain such as quinoa was ground into flour. You’ll know you have the right stone by the silky smooth feel of the surface. You can also see many potsherds littering the ground. It’s interesting to feel the pieces of pottery and imagine the people long ago who used the pots and vessels these shards once were part of. Be sure to leave them where you found them, though, so others can enjoy seeing them, too.
