The City of Five Flags

You will be seeking a micro container. A code word is located on the log inside the container. Don’t forget to sign the log and write the code word on your passport to get credit for finding this cache.

Pensacola is often called the “City of Five Flags” due to the five national governments who have controlled the area at various times:

Spain:  Pensacola was the capital of West Florida during Florida’s Second Spanish Periods (1783 – 1821)

France:  Spain surrendered Pensacola to France in 1719 and France held Pensacola for three years until driven out by a hurrican in 1722.

Britain:  Pensacola became the capital of West Florida during Florida’s British rule (1763 – 1783)

The Confederacy:  For many years, the flag flown over Pensacola to represent Confederate rule was the battle flag, the design most commonly associated with the Confederacy. However, Pensacola’s involvement in the Civil War had ended by 1862, before the battle flag was widley adopted. There is no evidence that the battle flag ever flew over Pensacola.

The United States:  In 1819 Spain and the United States negotiated the Adams-Onis Treaty, in which Spain sold the East and West Florida (separate territories at that time) to the United States for $5 million. In 1821, with Andrew Jackson as provisional governor, Pensacola became part of the United States
