Highbury Congregational Church is set in a beautiful Regency Square. It was built in 1933 to replace a poorly built Victorian Church in Winchcombe St. The site of the church later became the Odeon Cinema - the site of which is currently awaiting redevelopment. The original church started in 1827 in Grosvenor St and was founded by students coming from the Highbury Academy in London to spread the gospel in the new town of Cheltenham. Highbury Academy was sold to the Anglicans who later sold it to a football club from Woolwich later known as Arsenal.
The bricks for the current church came from Webb's brickyard in Battledown and the type hidden by Regency design in many local buildings.
There are several buildings in the area of interesting historic signifcance.
1st Cheltenham ( Highbury) Scout Group has been associated with Highbury Church since it started in March 1908 and runs a variety of activites for 6 to 14 year olds.
11th Cheltenham (Highbury) Guides have also been associated with the church since 1919 and is currently the oldest Girlguiding unit in Cheltenham.
