Church Micro 4536...Balderton-Methodist Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

The_Thorns: After many years, with CMs in the area someone has decided to take the fun away for us by throwing/stealing caches on a regular basis. It has eventually worn me down, so good luck if anyone else wants to make a go of it.

Geocache Description:

The cache is not in the church grounds but somewhere nearby. The area is fairly busy so stealth is likely to be needed.

This site was first occupied by a Methodist Chapel in 1815, remembered as the “little chapel with the balcony”. This original chapel was used for worship for just 42 years, and in 1856 the trustees bought land further down Main St. A new chapel was built there and opened in 1857 (now Balderton Library - GC4PQQG); the old chapel being then used as a schoolroom.

The new chapel was used for just 51 years. The church purchased more land next to the original chapel in 1899; they knocked that down and built the schoolroom behind the current church in 1900.

The current church was built in 1908 and is made with Ashlar stone, tiled roof and a lead spire.

The front boundary wall is curved in the centre to accommodate an ashlar memorial to commererate the loss of the men of Balderton who died in the 1914-1918 war; this was built in 1923
