Geocache Description:

A cache placed near a location used in the 1963 motion picture It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. You do not need to watch the movie to find the cache. It is a camouflaged micro, BYOP.

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is about the pursuit of $350,000 in stolen cash by a diverse and colorful group of strangers. "Smiler" Grogan, a suspect in a robbery on the run from the police, recklessly passes a number of vehicles on a twisting, mountainous road in the Mojave Desert before careening his car off a cliff and crashing. Some of the motorists from the passed vehicles stop to assist. Just before he dies, Grogan tells them about $350,000 in cash buried under a "big W" in Santa Rosita State Park. The "big W" turns out to be an arrangement of four palm trees angled in the shape of the letter W.

Santa Rosita State Park was actually a private estate locally known as "Portuguese Point" near Abalone Cove Reserve in Rancho Palos Verdes. None of the "big W" remains, the last palm having fallen in the 2000s, although one stump remained when last documented in 2011. From the posted coordinates, looking east, a number of palm trees can be seen. This is where the "big W" once stood. This is a private residence, don't try to go there. If you are interested, the stump can easily be viewed by climbing a hill that is around 100 feet to the south of the house.

Parking can be found in some of the nearby neighborhoods but be sure to check street signs for restrictions. Abalone Cove has limited parking hours and charges a fee. A bit further away, Terranea Resort and Trump National Golf Course offer free public parking during daylight hours. RPV municipal code 12.16.030 prohibits anyone from being inside the park after dark, defined as "one hour after sundown and one hour before sunrise". If you give me any reason to think you broke this law your log will be deleted. Good luck and happy caching!
