Geocache Description:

Note: The above co-ordinates are for the church car park and not the cache itself.

St John The Baptist, Armitage

St John the Baptist Church, Armitage, has been on the same site near the River Trent since 1160.

Once a Norman church with a tower of 1632, it was largely rebuilt in 1844, again in the Norman style to the design of Henry Ward, a Stafford architect.

The organ is of particular interest being built 1789-91 by Samuel Green for Lichfield Cathedral. It was brought in 1861 to Armitage and is the last, largest and best-preserved example of the classical style of english organ building. It is in fact the only completely restorable 18th century Cathedral-size organ left.

Church Micro Series

I have enjoyed a number of caches in this series in other parts of the country and was disappointed that Staffordshire had just three such caches (Kinver, Norton Canes and Leek) out of over 4000. Hopefully the caches that we place will encourage other Staffordshire-based CO's to contribute to the world's largest series. If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
