Geocache Description:

The Rail Trail GeoTrail (RTGT) Kickoff!!

Everyone is invited to join us on
Saturday, November 2, 2013
from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
for the launch of the Rail Trail GeoTrail

In 2006, the Palmetto Conservation Foundation completed a 1.9 mile rail-to-trail conversion from a former Norfolk Southern railroad corridor. This paved urban trail came to be known as the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail, or simply "The Rail Trail" to many local residents. The Rail Trail parallels two major roads and connects many neighborhoods to downtown Spartanburg. The Rail Trail is also located adjacent to many restaurants, retail businesses and recreational facilities like the Pine Street YMCA and the Hot Spot Skate Park.

To earn her Silver Award in Girl Scouts, AgentGeo has partnered with Palmetto Conservation Foundation, Partners for Active Living and the City of Spartanburg to bring to you the Rail Trail Geotrail (RTGT) consisting of 12 caches along the 1.9 mile stretch of trail. By answering questions about the area around each of the 12 caches and completing the RTGT Passport you will be eligible for your very own RTGT reward token.

Now onto the information concerning the event...
To jump start the RTGT we have organized a Kickoff event:

When: November 2 @ 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.

Where: Ricky's Drive-In next to the E Henry St trailhead of the Rail Trail; 307 Union St Sptbg (at the listed coordinates). Come early for breakfast or hang around afterwards and grab some lunch.

What: We will meet for a few announcements and enjoy the usual geocaching conversations and story swapping. We will explain to everyone what the RTGT is about, and hand out passports of the geotrail. There will be time to swap trackables and show off a few if you want to. We will also have door prizes given out at 1:00pm that you don't want to miss so hang around.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

STAY TUNED TO THIS PAGE AND WATCH FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS (if you have registered a "WILL ATTEND"). We will use this cache page for any RTGT specific communications.

If you are planning to walk the trail and do the RTGT please park at the upper gravel area at the trailhead and walk down to the kickoff area (it's a short walk). This will keep Ricky's parking lot free for the lunch crowd.
The coordinates for parking: N 34° 56.859 W 081° 55.256

Can't make the event and don't want to miss out on the fun? No problem...the geotrail will remain, and the passport will be available for download on both the Palmetto Conservation Foundation website and the Partners of Active Living website. This information will also be available on all RTGT geocaches which you can find by doing a search for "RTGT" on geocaching.com.
