The Event
Doubtless there will be a busy day of hunger-inducing geocaching around Howth in advance, but the event itself will kick off at 6.30 pm in the Bar at the Deerpark Hotel; there is a full bar menu with both light fare and full meals available. There is no requirement to purchase anything.
The four principal conspirators in the axis of evil are GoldCircle, Doug.G, tmsr and misteek - and we all hope to log millennial milestones around this time - and would like to celebrate our special moment with our geocaching friends! There is a discussion thread on the Geocaching Ireland Forums to assist with questions, organisation of pre-caching on Saturday, who's staying overnight, what's happening the next day and so on.
The Countdown
You should probably click here for a taste of what this is all about!
Getting There
Howth has an excellent public transport link in the DART which runs regularly to/from Dublin city, in addition to bus routes 31 & 31B; the last DART to the city leaves at 22:55 and the station is about 20 mins walk from the hotel.
If this makes the night too early for you, it is possible to stay overnight in any of Howth's many B&Bs and the hotel itself offers rooms at very reasonable rates - see the 'Related Web Page' link at the top if interested. Please note that the hotel website is a bit flaky - if you don't see cheap rates, just call them by phone and they can sort you out! A good number of people have elected ot stay over... just sayin'...
The hotel has ample free parking for those driving to the event - and the carpark is suitable for use if pre-caching the day away before the event.
Other Ideas
Weather permitting, we are additionally planning an assault on Cassana Rock by kayak on Sunday. Others have expressed interest in the usual suspects for Saturday - Where Bats Dare and Lion's Head. Whatever you choose to do, some of the best caching in Ireland is available in Howth, so be sure to take advantage while in the area. If these are going ahead, there will be discussion threads on the Geocaching Ireland Forums. A little birdy has told me we can expect about a dozen new caches - with a variety of cache types - to be published over the weekend. So, FTF runners, fill yer boots...
