O Santo
SÃO BENTO DA PORTA ABERTA (S. BENTO DE NÚRSIA)
São Bento nasceu na cidade italiana de Núrsia, em 24 de Março do ano 480. Filho de uma família nobre e cristã, é enviado para Roma para completar os estudos. Decepcionado com o estilo de vida da cidade, parte para o monte Subiaco, onde numa gruta, durante 3 anos, se dedica à reflexão.
Lenda do São Bento da Porta Aberta
Os habitantes de Cossourado (Paredes de Coura) nem queriam acreditar no que viam! O Santo que estava colocado na capela recentemente inaugurada, S. Bento, apareceu em cima de uma árvore do recinto, apesar da porta ter ficado fechada toda a noite e ainda o permanecer naquela altura. Apareceu o Pároco e todas as pessoas do lugar, dizendo que aquilo foi maldade de alguém. Depois de descerem o Santo, recolocaram-no no altar principal, que era seu e rezaram. Mudaram a fechadura da porta e fecharam a quatro chaves. Mas a surpresa desse dia passou para a estupefacção. Não é que o Santo estava, no outro dia, outra vez em cima da árvore? Depois de terem conferido que a porta estava trancada, e que a chave não tinha sido roubada, não encontraram explicação para o sucedido. Estaria o Santo zangado com o povo? Alguém reparou que talvez a capela tivesse pouca luz e a porta não deixava entrar ar por ser toda fechada, e também não deixava o Santo ver os seus devotos que por ali passavam. Resolveram então mandar fazer uma porta gradeada e que fosse bastante aberta. No dia seguinte, acorreram todos à capela, e verificaram que o Santo havia permanecido no seu belo altar. A partir daquele dia o S. Bento nunca mais saiu, e deram à capela e ao local o nome de S. Bento da Porta Aberta.
Romaria
A comemoração litúrgica é feita pela Igreja no dia 11 de Julho sendo que, neste caso, as cerimónias religiosas são sempre no segundo fim de semana de Julho.

The Saint
St. Benedict of the open door (Benedict of Nursia)
St. Benedict was born in the Italian city of Nursia, on the 24th March of the year 480. Son of a noble and Christian family, Benedict is sent to Rome to complete his studies. Disappointed with the Rome lifestyle, he goes to the Subiaco mountain, where he lives in a cave and dedicates 3 years of his life to reflection.
The legend of São Bento da Porta Aberta
The Cossourado (Paredes de Coura) population almost couldn’t believe what they were seeing! The St. Benedict, placed inside the recently inaugurated chapel, appeared up on a tree of the sanctuary, despite the fact that the door’s chapel had been closed during the night and it was still closed at that moment. The priest and all the locals thought that it might have been some meanness joke. They replaced the Saint again inside the chapel, on the main altar, and prayed. The people changed the door’s lock and closed it with four keys. The following day, the surprise of the previous day became astonishment: the Saint was again up the same tree. After checking that the door was closed and the key had not been stolen, they concluded that there was no explanation for what had happened. Was the St. Benedict angry with the locals?
Someone noticed that maybe the chapel didn’t have enough light and air, because the door was completely opaque. And this way the Saint could not see the devotee that was passing by. The locals decided to change that door for a barred door, so it was fairly open. The following day, all the locals went to the chapel and verified that the Saint was inside the chapel on its beautiful altar. After that day, the St. Benedict didn’t get out of the chapel again and the people gave to this sanctuary the name of St. Benedict of the Open Door.
Pilgrimage
The liturgical celebration is on the 11th July, but the religious ceremonies happen always on the second weekend of July.
