Rails-to-trails projects can be found around the world. They are former railway lines, that have been converted into paths designed for pedestrians, bicycle, skating, equstrian and/or light motorized traffic. Most are multiuse trails offering at least pedestrians and cyclist recreational access and right-of-way to the routes. (wikipedia)
Nõmme raudteetammi kergliiklustee (Nõmme embankment light traffic road)
The bike path from Nõmme to Väike-Õismäe is a rails-to-trails project in Tallinn, that is continously being extended. Hopefully one day the path will connect the eastern part of the city with the Rocca al Mare/Merimetsa trails around the North of Tallinn. We placed 4+1 caches along the trail between Hiiu (Vääna/Pärnu mnt) and Kadaka tee. The trail can be enjoyed by foot, bicycle or inline skates. During the winter months you can also access the trail from the Nõmme cross country tracks (tervise rada). There is a large parking area at the Vääna/Pärnu mnt intersection (Hiiu) and several smaller ones along the way. Public transport takes you to the Hiiu station.
