Geocache Description:

A quick cache and dash to bring you to Tetbury's forgotten St Saviours church.

The church of St Saviour, Tetbury, must have been one of the most splendid examples ever of a "little church for the poor" Every detail, from the alms box by the south door to the oak pegs in the vestry, is thoughtfully designed and beautifully crafted.
It is now, perhaps, the only virtually unaltered Tractarian church remaining in England.
In the C18 and C19 a parish church gathered valuable income from renting out pews to the wealthier members of the congregation.
In some cases, it meant that there were insufficient free seats for the poor. In Tetbury, in 1842, more than half the parishioners were classed as poor (1,800 people) and there were only 240 free places at St Mary's.
The chapel of ease, St Saviours, was consecrated in 1848.
Within a generation, pew rents were abolished, without the pew rent income, the parish could no longer afford to keep two churches.
By 1871 the Bishop of Gloucester issued a note under the Ecclesiastical Dilapidations Act, repairs were made but the church was seldom used.
In 1973 the church was declared redundant. It is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The building is now sound and well maintained.
Open during the day, do take time to go and look inside, lovely stained glass windows to be seen, designed by Michael O'Connor (1801 - 67)

“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list”
