Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the listed coordinates. Solve the mystery to unmask the final container.

**Before you hit "print," you may want to visit the "Related Web Page" above and grab a 4-page, printer-friendly PDF of all the solving materials involved in solving this puzzle multi.**

The original container included a Scooby mask to take and submit a photo. In the spirit of that original idea, if you'd like you can submit a photo with you as one of the gang (Photoshop or GIMP experience helpful). The cache owners have uploaded a photo of themselves along those lines.

In order to solve the puzzle, you’ll need to do both home work and field work. Your home work consists of determining the values for four keys, A, B, C and D. You’ll use those keys to unlock the location for your field work, where you’ll determine the values for three more keys, E, F and G. All seven values will then be used to determine the final location.

Part 1: The Trip to the Old Spooky Mansion

Scooby Doo, Norville “Shaggy” Rogers, Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley and Scooby’s nephew Scrappy Doo were investigating the mystery of the old spooky mansion. They decided that in order to be successful, they would need to stay the night, so they gathered some necessary supplies. Each of the six crime-solvers brought a different Scooby Snack and piece of equipment. They agreed to ride to the mansion in the Mystery Wagon together, but they each arrived at the wagon at a different time between 10:30 pm and 12 midnight.

  • In order of arrival were (1) the canine who brought Twinkies; (2) a male human crime-solver; (3) the crime-solver who brought a mask; (4) Daphne; (5) the woman who brought invisible ink; and (6) the crime-solver who brought a calculator.

  • Neither of the dogs brought Ding Dongs.

  • The woman who brought the magnifying glass arrived exactly one hour after the crime-solver who brought Ho-Hos but not the UV light.

  • One of the women brought cupcakes.

  • The Zebra Brownies, which were brought by a woman, did not arrive at the same time as the magnifying glass, which arrived later than Scooby did.

  • The invisible ink arrived after the cupcakes but before the Sno-Balls.

  • The 2 dogs arrived first and last.

  • Shaggy, surprisingly, does not care for Ho-Hos and would never bring them to share.

Part 2: Doggy Knowledge

Once the intrepid detectives reached the Old Spooky Mansion, they realized that in order to proceed they would have to do some research into official American Kennel Club dog breeds. They knew that Scooby and Scrappy were Great Danes, but they hadn’t realized how intertwined dog names and geography are. Help them by answering the questions with information from the AKC. While the answers about AKC breeds may be found without it, a very helpful tool is the custom Google Map here.

Part 3: Seance at the Old Spooky Mansion

The six members of the crime-solving team decided to hold a seance to help discover the secret of the old spooky mansion. Based on the following statements, determine the location of the group members around the table. (Orientation clues assume that all team members are facing the table, Roman numeral ”I” is located furthest north, and that clockwise is as viewed from above, as pictured.)

  • The tallest member of the team is sitting directly across the table from the shortest member of the team. This tallest member is further north than the shortest member.

  • The two women are seated next to each other; the shorter of the two women has the taller woman to her left and the shortest member of the team to her right.

  • The group members at Roman numerals IV & V do not wear eyeglasses.

  • The two dogs are not next to each other.

To unmask the location where you can see the ghostly images from the seance, add A, B. C and D to get the HW Key. Divide the key by 3036.939 and eliminate the decimal digits without rounding to determine the north coordinates. Divide the key by 1307.4076 and eliminate the decimal digits without rounding to determine the west coordinates.

Part 4: A Glimpse into the Past

During the seance, eerie glimpses into the past were uncovered. You’ll want to make note of these:

To unmask the final location, add E, F and G to get the FW Key. Add the HW Key from before to the FW Key. Divide the result by 3040.554 and eliminate the decimal digits without rounding to determine the north coordinates. Divide that same HW + FW key by 1309.0087 and eliminate the decimal digits without rounding to determine the west coordinates. Click here to verify your coordinates for the final location:

Part 5: The Unmasking

The dramatic reveal at the final container’s location: YOU were the culprit, masquerading by wearing a Scooby Doo mask! Better be sneaky or you might get hauled away by the authorities!
