Geocache Description:

Radley Engineering, Dungarvan, County Waterford.

Radley Engineering has been part of some of the most unique projects in both Ireland and the UK. Their involvement in high profile projects such as The Spire of Dublin demonstrates the capabilities of their team of engineers and workforce to adapt to any project. Some of their specialised projects include The Spire of Dublin, the world’s tallest stainless steel monument, Herron Tower skyscraper project, at the heart of Canary Wharf London (Financial District), crowned with a Radley Engineering mast and Waterford N25 Bypass Suir Cable Stay Bridge, Irelands longest cable-stayed suspension bridge.

The Dublin Spire is a steel artwork designed by architect Ian Ritchie, and was completed in January 2003. At 120 metres high (about 400 feet), it is the world's tallest sculpture. It is three metres wide (10 feet) at the base and tapers to a 15 centimetre wide beacon at the top. The top section is perforated and lit by small LEDs. The Spire stands in the centre of Dublin's main street, O'Connell Street. This spot was occupied until 1966 by Nelson's Pillar, a giant column of stone with a statue of Admiral Nelson on top. In 1966, the IRA blew the pillar up, as they considered it a sign of British Imperialism.

The spire was originally named Millennium Spire. The construction was part of the celebration of the Millennium, but opponents brought a legal action to prevent it being built. By the time this was sorted out, it was 2002. The Spire was constructed in six sections, each about 20m high. Construction involved the use of the tallest mobile crane ever seen in Ireland, capable of extending to 140 metres and dropping the sections of the Spire into place.
