Geocache Description:

A Challenge Cache for Scottish Earthcaches

The Challenge: To find and log ten earthcaches relating to different aspects of Scotland's geology.

The final cache is at the published coordinates, it must only be logged as found when you have found ten qualifying earthcaches. You are welcome to write a cache note with the details and change it to a find when you physically find the cache.

Scotland is a country with a long and varied geological history, captured in earthcaches from Portpatrick to Yell. In order to log this cache as found you must have found at least ONE Scottish earthcache in each of the categories listed below, and THREE glaciation caches. Examples of caches are given for each category, but any suitable earthcaches may be used.

1. Coastal/tidal feature – e.g. GC3X934 – St Ninian’s Tombolo; GC18P21 – “In a Spin” Corryvreckan Earthcache; GC2C2PJ – Falls of Lora; tidal island caches.
2. Fault – e.g. GC4AQR3 - The Ochil Fault, GC20DT8 - Great Glen East - Chanonry and Ardesier; Highland Boundary Fault caches
3. River feature - e.g. waterfalls - GCNNHW - Campsie Linn Earthcache; GC1YGBW - Falls of Shin Earthcache; ox-bow lakes - GC2EHC1 - The River that Time forgot?
4. Igneous feature – e.g. GC16BTQ Fingal’s Cave (Staffa); GC4B5GX - Silly Stirling; GC3YD0D - Pillows at Kinghorn
5. Fossil feature – e.g. GC1VXRF - Tim-BERRR!; GC2QG39 - Puenmodesmus Newmani; GC1Z407 - Eathie fossil beach
6. Historical feature – e.g. any Hutton’s unconformity (GC21VPQ etc); GC3MXC0 - That is the work of ice!; GC2D49P - Catpund Soapstone; GC1W0F5 - Bing-O! We struck oil!; GC1DTQB - Earthquake House
7. My favourite EC not otherwise included - e.g. soil types, mimetoliths, etc

You need to log THREE glaciation earthcaches, ONLY ONE OF WHICH CAN BE AN ERRATIC!
8. Glacial features – e.g. erratics; kettle-hole lakes; raised beaches; roche mountonees; crag-and-tail formations; U-shaped valleys, etc etc...

Some extra points:
1. Each earthcache may be used for ONE category only, even if it fulfils the criteria for more than one.
2. At least one earthcache must be on the other side of the Highland Boundary Fault from the others.
3. In your log, please list the earthcaches by category that you wish to use for a find, with the date on which you found them. You should have TEN different Scottish earthcaches (1, ..., 7, 8 times 3) listed in your log, AND have signed the cache log to qualify for a find.
4. In case of dispute, the CO's decision is final. Please contact me if you have any queries before logging.
