Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed, immediately following the service, to commemorate the re-opening of St Peter's Church. The cache container is well disguised, but is in full view unless any leaves have blown onto it.

There is parking in the adjacent community centre car park. Please be careful with on-street parking during term time as hour long restrictions are in place.

Saint Peter's ecclesiastical parish was formed in 1909, althought the church wasn't completed until 1912. The Foundation Stone was laid on 25th February, 1911 by Lady Ernest Maur, In November 2005, the church was made redundant. A partnership was formed between the Elim Pentecostal Church and the Open Heaven foundation, who jointly acquired the chruch. Following extensive building works, the church was re-opened on 17th August, 2013. During the course of the building works, a time capsule was discovered behind the foundation stone. It contained a copy of the order of service for the laying of the foundation stone, together with a Diocesan magazine. At the 2013 re-opening ceremony, a time capsule was placed in the metal cupboard at the east end of the church, formerly used to store the Holy Sacrement.

I was very pleased to take part in the reopening celebrations, together with 3 other keen local bellringers. After chiming the church bell (approx 5 cwt), we rang a selection of handbell tunes. The celebrations were attended by several hundred people, all of whom enjoyed seeing the transformed and vibrant new building. The space has been divided into a number of areas for workship and social gathering. The east end has been transformed with the addition of a main entrance, with large glass doors. The east window can be admired inside from the mezzanine floors.

The cache is placed in the church grounds, with the kind and enthusiastic permission of the church who are very keen to welcome visitors to their new building. Please take care not to trample on the flower beds when reaching the cache. There is no need to disturb the soil, though you may need to stride over it.

If the church is open, please take the opportunity to look inside. There is a nice coffee shop!
