Geocache Description:

The Russalka Memorial

The Russalka Memorial, a striking sculpture of an angel facing out into the sea horizon, is a memorial to the 177 men of the "Russalka," a Russian military ship that tragically sunk while en route to Helsinki in 1893. The monument was erected on 7. September 1902. Created by famed Estonian sculptor Amandus H. Adamson, the monument has become a Tallinn landmark and a traditional spot for Russian couples to lay flowers on their wedding day.

Russalka monument

Russalka monument on Venemaa soomuslaevas "Russalka" hukkunud 177 meeskonnaliikme mälestuseks pühendatud mälestusmärk. Laev hukkus 1893. aastal, olles teel Helsinkisse. Laevaga läksid märga hauda ka Eesti meremehed. Mälestussamba valmistas Eesti skulptor Amandus H. Adamson. 1902. aastal sai Russalka endale koha mere ääres.

Monument kujutab inglit, kes osutab õigeusu ristiga merele laevahuku oletatava koha suunas.
Ingli modelliks oli kunstniku majapidajanna Juliana Rootsi, kelle lapselaps on Tiit Made.
