L'Eglise Saint Jean Baptiste de Bourbourg

HISTOIRE

L'église Saint Jean Baptiste de Bourbourg est l'une des plus grandes de Flandre.

Elle a été construite dès l'origine avec le concours des religieux de l'Abbaye Saint Bertin de Saint Omer, décimateurs de la paroisse.
Encore marqué par l'Art Roman et l'Art Gothique, l'édifice est de structure basilicale. Il est formé de 3 vaisseaux
nef, et bas côtés, d'un transept saillant dont la croisée porte le clocher, et d'un vaste choeur à bas-côtés et chapelles latérales.
L'Eglise Saint Jean-Baptiste a été en partie détruite par le feu lors de l'offensive allemande sur Dunkerque en Mai 1940.
La Nef Romane, transept et la tour avec carillons ont été restaurés et inaugurés en 1962.

Le choeur gothique est alors séparé de la partie romane par un mur. C'est seulement 60 ans plus tard, en 2008
que le choeur s'ouvre aux visiteurs.
En effet, dans le cadre d'une Commande Publique, l'Artiste Anglais, Sir Anthony Caro pense une oeuvre pour le lieu :
"Le Choeur de lumière", voulu comme une chapelle d'espérance.

L'Eglise possède un autre trésor : "La Châsse de Notre-Dame". Celle-ci fut, en 1883, lors de la guerre de 100 ans à l'origine d'un miracle. En effet, des mercenaires

bretons forcèrent la porte de l'Eglise ; l'un d'entre eux aperçu la statue.
En s'apercevant que celle-ci est en bois et non en or comme il le croyait, il la frappe violemment avec sa dague.

La statue se mit alors à saigner, les cloches à résonner et le soldat tomba raide mort.
Des peintures racontant ce miracle sont d'ailleurs visibles derrière la Châsse.
Dans le choeur gothique, 3 grands vitraux, financés par l'Association des Amis de Saint Jean-Baptiste, retracent la vie du Saint Patron de la Paroisse.

L'indépendance laissée à l'artiste a libéré une telle créativité que "Le choeur de Lumière" de Bourbourg s'imposera comme un haut-lieu d'art sacré comparable à la chapelle

du Rosaire à Vence, à laquelle notre Henri Matisse a donné un rayonnement international.

CHURCH HISTORY

"This beautiful building is well worth a visit"

The Church of St. Jean Baptist of Bourbourg is one of the largest in Flanders.

It was built from the outset with the help of the religious of the Abbey of St. Bertin Saint Omer, tithe of the parish.
Still marked by the Romanesque and Gothic art, the building is basilica structure. It consists of three vessels
nave and aisles, a transept which cross the door bell, and a large choir aisles and side chapels.
The Church of Saint John the Baptist was partially destroyed by fire during the German offensive of Dunkirk in May 1940.
The Romanesque nave, transept and the tower with chimes were restored and opened in 1962.

The Gothic choir is then separated from the Romanesque part by a wall. Only 60 years later, in 2008
the choir is open to visitors.
Indeed, in the context of Public Order, the English artist, Sir Anthony Caro think for a work place:
"The Choir of Light", intended as a chapel of hope.

The church has another treasure: "The Shrine of Our Lady." This was in 1883, during the 100 years war at the origin of a miracle. Indeed, mercenaries

Britons forced the door of the Church, one of them saw the statue.
In perceiving that it is wood, not gold as he thought, he violently struck with his dagger.

The statue then began to bleed, the bells ringing and the soldier fell dead.
Paintings narrating this miracle are also visible behind the Shrine.
In the Gothic choir, 3 large windows, funded by the Friends of St. John the Baptist, depicting the life of the patron saint of the parish.
