Geocache Description:

Church Micro 4116...Westwood - St Mary's   westwood

Church of St. Mary, Westwood Possibly the most notable church is that of the Parish church of St. Mary the Virgin. Built of ashlar rubble, and its tower visible for many miles around, it is not entirely certain when the very first church was built on the current site. There is evidence in the chancel of work that pre-dates the 15th century; the basic, simple features of the church have even been dated to around the 12th or 13th centuries. The current nave was rebuilt in c.15th century - also built at this time was the North aisle, giving a view of the high altar. It is known that the current tower was built around the 16th century, under the direction of Thomas Horton, believed to be the then occupant of Westwood manor. The church was originally dedicated not to Mary the Virgin, but to All Saints - but it is believed that this dedication was lost by around the 16th century. Inside the church there are some unique features, one of which being the medieval stained glass window: it bears the scene of the incarnation of Christ, symbolised by lilies, however it also includes the crucifixion - this is a rare combination to be seen. There are thought to be only 7 like it, the window in this church being one of them. Another interesting, perhaps somewhat peculiar feature of the church is a carved stone devil figure on the west wall nave, known as the 'old lad of Westwood' or 'the Westwood imp'. Inscribed beneath the figure are the words 'Resist me and I shall flee'. Also present in the church are monuments to those who gave their lives in the first and second world wars (notably, the list of those who fought in WW1 is considerably longer than those who fought in WWII.). A noticeable plaque is dedicated to a church organist, who died at the age of 20 - interestingly enough, the organist had already been playing for the church for 8 years before they died. There are also some local ghosts who have become associated with the church. Along a path nearby to the church, Cabbots, there have been occasional sightings of a monk figure. There have also been reported sightings of a soldier in medieval dress, said to sometimes appear and throw a spear at the door of the church.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
