The Medway Canoe Trail runs  for 31km from Tonbridge to Allington near Maidstone.
The Environment Agency have a FREE splashproof Medway Canoe Trail guide with a full map. To obtain a copy just email your postal address to allington.lock@environment-agency.gov.uk with subject=MedwayCanoeTrailleaflet
Over the last few years the Environment Agency has invested heavily in providing new facilities for canoeists. All of the locks now have new purpose designed landing stages so that canoeists can easily portage around each lock and there are also new launch points, weir passes (so no need to portage), toilets, showers and car parking.
The river is generally flat water paddling and can be paddled upstream or downstream in the summer months. The exception to this is when there is un-seasonal rainfall or during the winter months. You can check the status of the river whether GREEN (normal river flow and levels) or RED (strong river stream) by clicking here
Note that:
  • You are supposed to have a licence to boat on the river. If you plan on canoeing more than a few times, or on more than one waterway the most cost-effective way may be the annual licence from the British Canoe Union. Canoe-England
  • A buoyancy aid is recommended, even if you can swim.
  • Be careful especially near weirs, sluices and canoe passes. These increase the risk of capsize, especially at times of high water flow. There is a risk of entrapment or even drowning.
  • Be prepared to deal with getting wet. Although this may be pleasant in summer it can be dangerous in colder months.
  • Electronic gadgets tend not to cope well with water so if you are taking them with you I recommend that you use appropriate waterproofing protection for them.
