Brancaster Staithe is a coastal village with a long history of fishing. Many of the same families who fished the local waters 200 years ago still exist in the village today some of which still working as fishermen. As with many fishing communities around the UK, the fishing trade has diminished and the harbour is now home to many pleasure sailors and motor boaters.
The harbour and surrounding salt marshes are a haven for wildlife and protected by many national and international designations including Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area. It also falls within the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1967 from the Trustees of the Brancaster Manorial Trust with Enterprise Neptune Funds and is managed by a small coastal ranger team.
The buildings behind you were once home to the Warden of Scolt Head Island (also owned by National Trust but managed by Natural England) and before that one of the three village Pubs, The Victory. Now owned by the National Trust, it houses Brancaster Activity Centre which welcomes schools from all over England who stay and experience coastal discovery and adventure activities.
