It may be hard to imagine today, but this mountainside was once a small ski area known as Geneva Basin. Constructed in 1963 as Indianhead Ski Area, the resort suffered numerous financial hardships throughout its history and eventually closed in 1984 after an empty chair fell from a ski lift. Private investors worked for nearly a decade to reopen the ski area, but since no operator could be found, the U.S. Forest Service burned down the lodge and the remaining ski lifts were removed in 1993. During its heyday, Geneva Basin was described as “simple, laid-back and inexpensive,” and offered food service, a ski school, rentals, and an award winning ski patrol.

Take Guanella Pass Road (County Road 62) north from Grant until you reach the Park-Clear Creek County line. Just past the county line, turn left onto an unmarked paved road and park at the gate. Walk down the road until you reach the clearing, cross over the creek, and follow the old service road up to the cache. Bring a map of the ski area with you and see if you can identify the old runs!
