Hermanus (originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, but shortened as the name was too long for the postal service), is a town located on the southern coast of the Western Cape.
It is most famous for southern right whale watching during the southern winter and spring during which whales can be seen frolicking in the waves from the cliffs all around town. They can arrive as early as June and usually depart in early December.
Hermanus is also home to the world’s first Whale Crier since August 1992; his mission to alert hundreds of shore-based whale watchers to the whereabouts of whales by sounding his kelp horn. The town’s first Whale Crier was Pieter Claasen, an employee of the Old Harbour. He retired in 1998 and was succeeded by Wilson Salukazana (1998-2006). The current Crier is Zolile Baleni.
Southern rights were once hunted close to extinction and are now protected to ensure the survival of the species. The Old Harbour Museum contains several exhibitions that explain the whaling industry, including a complete whale skeleton.
