O Mistério de "barco afundado"

O mar mostrava a sua fúria ao largo de toda a ilha de Santa Maria.
Vindo de Havana, o vapor espanhol “Canárias” (ex “Constituiçón”) e os seus 19 passageiros e 98 tripulantes, com destino a Cádis, passavam perto da ilha com enormes dificuldades.
Numa luta que parecia não ter fim, o vapor cedia para o mar e chegava-se cada vez mais perto da costa, na baia da Praia Formosa.
Segundo uma revista da altura, “O Fayalense”, o vapor “Encalhou (…), por causa de muita agua que fazia. Poucos dias depois rebentou-lhe fogo a bordo”, ao que se pensa “lançado pelo proprio capitão”.
Estes factos seriam depois publicados pelo Jornal de Noticias. Segundo este, quando o vapor espanhol de 1436 toneladas pertencente á Compañía Trasatlántica Española encalhou, o comandante apenas ordenou que fossem retirados do barco alguns mantimentos, bagagem e pratas.
Sem que ninguém saiba o porquê, “apenas” voltou seis dias depois: “foi o capitão a bordo e ordenou a 3 homens da sua tripulação que aprontassem no porão coisas para irem para terra, dirigiu-se à camara, e quando de la saiu para desembarcar deixou ficar os ditos homens empregados no mesmo serviço.”
Por volta das sete horas da noite, “os homens notaram que da camara saia muito fumo”, e ao verificarem a camarata, notaram que esta estava “em chammas”. Foi aí que se aperceberam do terrível que estava para acontecer, pois “a bordo havia grande porção de pólvora”.
Confiando no seu capitão, “tocaram a rebate nos sinos”… mas ...“O capitão, em terra, não fez caso disso...”
Por essa hora, o escuro já cobria o céu, mas os marinheiros não tinham outra opção senão usar a lancha que havia a bordo. Aí o capitão “mandou colocar um pharol na rocha, para cuja luz os marinheiros se dirigiram. Era exactamente no ponto mais perigoso; e como o mar estava embravecido, a lancha revirou, e apenas se salvaram, por milagre dois homens.”
Três horas depois ouviu-se uma grande detonação por toda a ilha; “era a explosão do paiol do vapor”, produzindo “uma espécie de aurora boreal, com fogos de cores, porque as bebidas alcoólicas o produziam nos ares.”
“Foi opinião geral que o incêndio foi ateado pelo capitão”, com agravante de querer fazer dele 3 vítimas, para “não ficarem testemunhas do seu attentado!”
"O fim de tudo isto ninguém o sabe;”, mas a verdade é que o capitão recusou todas as ajudas vindas das autoridades, tendo alegado que o vapor pertencia a uma companhia da qual ele era um dos seus maiores accionistas e seu representante.
“Muitos objectos deixou de propósito perder, pois tivera tempo em 6 dias de salvar tudo. (…) O vapor era transporte de tropas, e na sua última viagem levou mais de mil praças para Cuba."
Este vapor fazia ligações entre Espanha e Cuba pois decorria nessa altura a guerra dos 10 anos (La Guerra de los Diez Años / La Guerra Grande (1868-1878)).
Nos dias de hoje, o chamado de "o barco afundado" pelos locais, permanece um verdadeiro mistério para os marienses. Perfeitamente visível dentro e fora de água, permanece ainda no fundo grande parte do esqueleto daquele grande vapor de ferro.

The Mystery of "Sunken Boat"

It was exactly at the most dangerous point, and as the sea was rough, the boat rolled, and only two men were saved as by a miracle. "
Three hours later there was a large explosion across the island, "was the explosion of the powder magazine of the ship," producing "a kind of aurora borealis, with fireworks colors, because the alcoholic beverages produced in the air."
"It was the general opinion that the fire was kindled by the master" with aggravating want to make it three victims, "not to become witnesses of his attack!"
"The end of all this no one knows," but the truth is that the captain refused all aid coming from the authorities and claimed that the steam belonged to a company of which he was one of its major shareholders and their representative.

This vapor made connections between Spain and Cuba arose because at that time the war of 10 years (La Guerra de los Diez Años / La Grande Guerra (1868-1878)).
Nowadays, called the "sunken boat" by locals, remains a mystery for Marienses. Clearly visible in and out of water remains in the background most of the skeleton of the great steam iron.
