This cache is one in a series of state park caches sponsored by the Wisconsin Geocaching Association in cooperation with the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources to promote geocaching in our state parks.
Copper Culture State Park is so named because of the 1952 archeological excavation here that unearthed the remains of an ancient culture that learned to tool copper left behind by the last glacier. It is the oldest known burial ground in all of eastern North America dating back some 7500 years. A free museum on the grounds has displays of the excavation and of Copper Culture tools as well as other artifacts relating to the history of the area. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Park services include water, bathrooms, and picnic shelter with grills. Interpretive signs along the trails in the 48 acre park guide visitors through the archeological history. No state park sticker/pass is required at Copper Culture State Park. The container is an ammo box that has room for a few trade items and travel bugs and is located along the Woodland Trail that begins at the upper parking area. Please keep to the trail. No bushwacking is required. It is recommended that you bring bug repellent. Also, be reminded that it illegal to remove anything from Wisconsin’s state parks. Copper Culture State Park is a protected archeological site.
The Lake Michigan shoreline dominates the till plains biome. This biome was shaped by the last glaciation with glacial till left behind forming the landscape of eskers, drumlins and moraines most easily seen within the Kettle Moraine forest units. The lakeshore displays sand dunes that will often adjoin tamarack swamplands. Close to Lake Michigan’s shores, birds of water such as shorebirds and ducks will be found. Animal life may include White Tailed Deer and small mammals such as otters and fox.
